Creating Work Ethics – The Top Down Principle
In order to establish a company with good employee work ethics it is important to ensure that all employees follow the rules, setting a good example for the others.
Just as your parents said when you were small, “do as I say”, if they were not setting a good example, what kind of message did it send? The business world is no different and this is one of the leading areas of downfalls for companies of all sizes. If the upper management and supervisors are not practicing what they preach the work ethics will likely be considered a joke in the workplace. There is a systematic way of preparing, instilling and enforcing good work ethics in any company, here’s how.
A Written Policy
A good written policy of work ethics is the first step in ensuring a good working environment. Not only does a written policy protect the company, but also the individual employees. It should address the conduct that is expected from the employee toward other employees, clients, and the company as a whole. If the policy is written and the employees are required to read the policy it is very difficult for them to contend that they did not understand or know about the policies. The signed contract of the employee agreeing to follow the rules and regulations of the company is admissible into a court of law. This is an extremely important step in providing a good ethical, profitable and decent work environment. A Policy For All It is important that the policy of rules and guidelines are followed by everyone and not only the lower level employees. Managers, supervisors and other upper management officials should be held to the same standards. A good policy of work ethics does not overlook inappropriate behavior based on popularity or job rank. It should state that all employees regardless of position held are equal when it comes to following the companies rules. One of the leading complaints throughout companies worldwide is the fact that they overlook or have a separate code of conduct for general employees and management. This is not acceptable and can lead to much worse problems than ethics violations. Enforcing The Policy A written work ethics policy is a great thing to have and can protect the interests of a company very efficiently if enforced. If the policy is not enforced, monitored or consulted, how can it work? That’s right, it can not. A team of individuals or specific people should be appointed to a committee or board that reviews ethics complaints. If there is a violation punishment must be consistent with the written policy. If there is never any punishment or enforcement, employees will likely not take the policy seriously.
