Ethics - Why Important
Applied ethics is one of the leading training methods used by trainers to help employees understand how important ethics are in a business.
Ethics is not only a concern for the business community, but also society in general. Maintaining honesty and integrity is a very important aspect of everyday life and individuals should take their actions very seriously. After much research many business owners, especially large corporations have found that many employees are in desperate need of ethics training classes. For this reason there have been several thousand companies enter into teaching others how to handle ethical dilemmas, conduct investigations and regain control after a breach.
Ethics training generally focuses on the Applied ethics scenarios. This is where the trainer or other individuals train employees and managers to assess real life situations. In most cases the scenarios are actual cases or situations that other companies have faced. There is a great deal of research in place so that the trainers or company can provide excellent training. It is important that the scenarios are real life experiences, because it not only helps the employee understand, but also makes it more realistic. Even though there are many cases that corporations have had to face that seem unrealistic.
Role playing and discussing the parts of the scenario help employees, managers and business owners understand how dilemmas can seem simple in the beginning, but continue to grow. Many times employees will know that there behavior or actions are borderline, but they think that they can handle it and stop at any time. Unfortunately, in many cases the actions or behaviors have grown so quickly that they become out of control before they even realize it. Sometimes other employees may be involved or have knowledge of the behavior, but due to lack of ethics training or company guidelines, may choose to remain silent. The silence is what can absolutely kill the business. Not only can it break them financially, but also drive clients and customers away. It is no different then someone ruining your good reputation or stealing from your personal bank account. How long could you sustain your lifestyle with someone stealing from you, no matter how small the allotments? If you are like most people, it would not take long to break the back account. Ethics is everyone’s concern and employees, managers, business owners and private citizens must ensure that they always report unethical behavior immediately. Most companies have a written policy on ethics and how employees should report any violations. It is never easy to report someone, but in order for the business to survive, the violations must stop. Ethical violations are not always over the exchange of money either. Sometimes there are ethics violations in the stealing of service, unethical treatment of clients/customers or some type of harassment. There is a very broad range of issues when looking at a companies policy on ethics and that is the reason the company should spend great time detailing the exacts of every ethical dilemma that they can think of.
