Corporate Social Responsibility – Moving Toward
The societal push for a more environmentally safe, production of goods has become one of the hottest topics in business. Not only is there a push for protection of the environment, but also the safety and truth to the output of the corporation. Corporate social responsibility is a forever-changing term that basically relates to the balancing act of product production, economical stability and the adherence of laws, regulations as well as other community safe guards. Companies worldwide are taxed with producing goods and services that have minimal negative effect on all living things.
Now many people, especially those not in the business leadership community, wonder how exactly this responsibility affects them. Many might even say that it has nothing to do with them and this is the thought process that has caused irreversible damage in the past. When you purchase food from the grocery store, is corporate social responsibility important to you? How about when you buy a car or take your children out to the park? Most people really do not grasp the concept of social responsibility until it is related to them. When you purchase food from the grocery store you expect it to be safe and all the appropriate actions be taken by the production company to ensure your family has a safe meal. If the company that is packaging or treating the food is not adhering to quality standards, they are not only placing your family in jeopardy, but thousands of others as well. This is an example of corporate social responsibility and how the Food Company must adhere to the safety of it's clients by practicing safe handling procedures.
Automobile plants have been in the lime light with social responsibility for many years. With the global warming situation and the emissions from the exhaust of an automobile, scientists predict detrimental effects in the future. Several environmentally savvy groups have stepped in and lobbied the government to enact tougher laws, making the company responsible for the potential pollution effects. Several car manufacturers have gone above and beyond the industry standards to ensure that they are doing their part in keeping the environment safe. This is a good example of a corporation moving toward a more corporate social responsibility status.
There are still many corporations that take a very defensive stance towards social responsibility because it costs them dearly and could even risk their corporation. Many of the automobile manufacturers have stated that with tougher laws it could cause them to fold. Others would have to pass the cost to the consumer, which they fear would result in a fall in revenue. Corporate social responsibility is not cheap, but what is environmental safety worth? If the situation is ignored eventually, there will be more damage than can be repaired. If every corporation will begin implementing steps and moving toward a safer product production, the world will be a much better place.
