Business Ethics Training

Keys To Successful Business Ethics Training

There are many benefits to business ethics training for employees. A comprehensive business ethics training program, combined with ethical business practices from upper level CEO’s and management, fosters a positive work environment where more people view the company as a team rather than looking out for themselves. Employee morale is likely to improve and there is evidence that business ethics training plays a vital role in employee retention.

Ethics are important for any business since they establish how the general public, your employees and your customer base perceive your business. It is important for your business to be reputable. Good business ethics can lead to a greater perception from others about your business and service, leading to positive reviews, and both repeat as well as new business. Bad business ethics on the other hand are damaging to your reputation and the bottom financial line. People will not want to be associated with your company if they feel that you have a poor ethical base. Employee morale will suffer, as they are shameful to be associated with your business, this will likely lead to poor quality of work, leading to a never ending downward spiral of your reputation and services.

Business ethics training needs to be cautiously structured. Ethics training should be mandatory for all hires. Employees should be familiarized with the code of ethics they must follow and what is expected from them. Specific scenarios can be presented to them to test their decision making skills and analyze how ethical their responses are. There are five basic aspects of business ethics training that need to be touched upon: honesty, responsibility, respect, fairness and compassion. Employees must also be reminded of compliance laws and company specific regulations regarding Internet usage, client/customer confidentiality, work place romance, etc. Employees should know how to report misconduct of fellow employees and if their name will remain confidential when reporting to upper management. Employees should be reminded that offenders of company ethics will be reprimanded and punished with nobody being above the code of ethics.

Perhaps the biggest part of business ethics training is to continuously remind employees of ethics long after the in-house training. Making sure measures discussed during training are practiced and in use is very important. There shouldn’t be incidences of employees reporting misconduct of other workers only to have the act go unpunished or overlooked. If employees are promised confidentiality when reporting unethical behavior of fellow employees there shouldn’t be incidents where their identity is leaked to other employees. Things like this will create tension in the workplace and kill employee morale. Also, directors and management must remember that they are supposed to be models of ethical behavior and are under heavy scrutiny. Much of employee behavior is based on the behavior of those above them in the chain of command.
